When I like a subject, I’ll paint them over and over. Not being great at likenesses, the portraits shift and my personal repository of reference materials warp the faces so everyone looks familiar. For example, David Wojnarowicz looks like Jerry Seinfeld with a touch of John Travolta. My grandmother’s classmate looks like the building manager at DAAP.
I don’t know if familiar is a good goal but it’s definitely interesting.
